In addition to data, metadata – data about data – is important. Not convinced?
Compare your music collection from a decade or two ago to the one that you have today. Earlier, you probably had music files where each file was named using the 8.3 convention for file names and directory names. To play a file, you had to navigate through the directory structure.
Today, you will most likely fire up a music player and search for the song by its name. While search by name is simple, search by artist or album is also possible if you have stored such information with it.
Hope that proves the importance of metadata for you.
