Due to the arrangement of the mirror used in a DSLR, it has to be moved out of the path of light, allowing light to fall on the sensor.

Considering that this movement causes what is commonly known as ‘mirror slap’ and a small vibration in the camera, is there no better mechanism to move the mirror out of the path of light? Is it not possible to slide the mirror instead of flipping it?

This is with the assumption that sliding will cause less of a vibration as compared to flipping the mirror and will also be fast enough.
