A recent newspaper article mentioned that the common perception of cowhands shooting each other at the slightest offense, may not have been true in all cases. It seems that gunslingers avoided confrontations as much as possible. This report goes counter to the many western theme books made popular by authors like J T Edson or Louis L’Amour. As per those books, most heroes can draw very fast and most gun slingers are looking at the slightest reason to draw and shoot.
Similarly, many people still believe that elephants and tigers openly roam around in India and that many Indians are snake charmers. While this may have been true a long time ago, it is very rare to find elephants roaming openly in cities in India. Also, there are less that 1,500 tigers left.
