Spreading the climax over multiple films seems to be the new trend. If I note correctly, this was started by the Harry Potter series, when they decided to picturize the last book (Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows) as two films.

While it was justified and true to spirit to make ‘The Lord of the Rings’ saga as three films (given that there were three books), converting ‘The Hobbit’ into three films feels like a stretch and a maximization of revenue. While watching the hobbit parts, it is easy to get engrossed and the three film decision seems valid.

Now, the last book in the ‘The Hunger Games’ trilogy has been split across two films.
