Recently, we visited the Nehru Science Center in Worli, Mumbai. One of the exhibits there had three chairs with different surfaces. The intention was to find out the ‘more comfortable’ chair. The first chair had a lot of dimples on it, while the second and the third chairs had nails of varying thickness.
On observing the chairs, we immediately draw the conclusion the dimpled chair would be the most comfortable. But that is not true. In fact, the chairs with the nails are more comfortable that the dimpled chair. Why? Because in the case of the nails, the weight of the person is equally distributed amongst all the nails, while that is not the case in the dimpled chair.
