I have seen this frequently in office – when colleagues come to work in the morning, they go and empty their half-filled water bottles, before filling new water from the water filter for the day.

I believe this is quite a waste of good water.

We believe that water left overnight in the office needs to be changed, but have not hassles buying bottled water from companies, where the water was manufactured (bottled) many days ago. Why this dichotomy in behaviour?

A couple of suggestions to save water if you are in the habit of changing overnight water:

  1. Use a smaller sized bottle – you may have to fill it frquently, but then the amount of water left-over from the day before will be lesser.
  2. Look at the time of the day while filling the bottle – if you are nearing the end of the day, do not fill the bottle to the brim. Leave it half-empty.
